Michael CAINE
Type-setter
François DA ROS (1941-2023) Craft National Living Treasures Student

Michael Caine, assistant to the typographer and master printer François Da Ros, practises an art that has become rare nowadays, and that is characterized by the perfection of impression and the beauty of the colours directly printed on the paper with metal founder's type.

This ancestral printing technique enables the young artist – part-time lecturer at the Ecole Estienne – to enjoy the sensuality of working with the handmade book.

Through his work, Michael Caine plays a large role in the revitalization of a professional sector, particularly by establishing links between little known paper suppliers, manufacturers and distributors of type and customers who are looking for the quality of genuine art books. His passion for the graphic arts, in particular for the early 20th century Russian avant garde, has led Michael Caine to pursue his research about layout design as far as possible.
